The Research Institute of Petroleum Exploration and Development (RIPED) was established in 1958. It is the R&D center of China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) and PetroChina Company Limited (PetroChina). Its research activities cover almost all the areas in upstream petroleum business including strategic development planning for CNPC/PetroChina global upstream business, R&D for major fundamental applied theories and techniques, and E&P technical support for the company's oil/gas projects arund the world.
RIPED headquarters is based in Beijing and its three subsidiary research branch institutes are located in Langfang, Hebei Province, Lanzhou, Gansu Province, and Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province. RIPED boasts its approximate 2,000 research professionals, including 6 highly recognized members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE).
